Ed's Biography

Ed Fendley, 40, is a dedicated and experienced school and community leader. His extensive service to Arlington includes leadership positions in his children's schools, his neighborhood, and county-wide advisory committees.

Ed has served as the president of the Drew Model School Association, chair of the Transportation Safety Committee of the Swanson Middle School PTA, and as Washington-Lee (W-L) High School PTA representative to the Arlington Public Schools Advisory Council on Instruction. Ed has also served on the School Board Advisory Council on School Facilities and Capital Programs and the Superintendent's Advisory Committee on Accountability and Evaluation. In recent years, Ed helped represent Drew Model School parents on the Drew-Nauck Advisory Committee, and was an active member of the W-L Parking Study Committee.

Ed is an accomplished contributor to our community. He has served as President of the Bluemont Civic Association, Chairman of the Arlington Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Chairman of the Arlington Transportation Commission, and as Bluemont's representative to the Arlington Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee and to the Arlington County Civic Federation. He has represented Northern Virginia on the regional Air Quality Public Advisory Committee.

Professionally, Ed has extensive experience as a manager and negotiator. His 18-year Federal career includes assignments at the White House, three U.S. embassies and consulates, the office of the Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, and as an international negotiator and financial manager at the U.S. Department of State. Ed received in 2005 the Department's Meritorious Honor Award for his work as lead U.S. negotiator on financial matters under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He currently works in the Department of State's Bureau of Oceans, International Environmental and Scientific Affairs.

Ed has a personal commitment to Arlington's schools. Ed and his wife, Joyce, a former Foreign Service telecommunications specialist, have four children. Their daughter Robbie is sophomore at Washington-Lee High School and a graduate of Swanson Middle School and Key Elementary School. Their oldest son, Zack, is in 8th Grade at Swanson and a graduate of Drew Model School. Their daughter Gina and son Jamey attend Drew. The Fendleys live in the Bluemont neighborhood.

Sports, exercise and extracurricular activities are a big part of the Fendleys' lives. Ed bikes to work every day and is a competitive triathlete. Joyce is an avid trail runner currently training for the Massanutten, Virginia 102-mile race. Robbie is a lacrosse player and thespian. Zack is a diver and skateboarder. Jamey and Gina both enjoy gymnastics and soccer.

Ed attended public schools from kindergarten through university. He received undergraduate degrees in statistics and political science from the University of Illinois, and has studied urban and environmental planning at the University of Virginia Falls Church campus. Ed's mother is a retired public schoolteacher, and his sister is a public high school teacher. Ed speaks Indonesian and French.
